Jaguars Ready to Kick Off the 2025 Season

Updated: Aug 11

This past Friday night, the Jaguar Nation got its first look at the hard work our West Florida High School football team has put in this summer. The annual Red & Black Game was more than just a scrimmage; it was a showcase of grit, discipline, and the brotherhood these young men have built. On the sidelines, players encouraged each other with high-fives, laughter, and smiles — but when it was time to work, they responded with a sharp “Yes, Coach!” and executed without hesitation.

“The Red and Black Game served as a dress rehearsal for our games. We got to walk our athletes through a real game day schedule including pregame meal and our timeline of events that take place before the game, Coach Summerford explains:”

For some players, this was their first time in front of a fan base with live-contact football, and they met the challenge head-on. Players got the feel of game-day pressure with referees, a running clock, and the energy of a true stadium atmosphere.

"We do try to practice this as much as we can, but there is nothing like getting to really 'get after it' in the stadium with the lights on," continues Coach Summerford.

Coaches prepared diligently for this scrimmage and are now analyzing and putting together their game plan for this week's practices and first big test of the season. This Thursday night, the Jaguars hit the road for the Kickoff Classic against Pace High School.

“Our K.O. Classic... should be action-packed. It’s a great test and measuring stick to see where we are — not just for Varsity, but for all three teams in our program. This will be the first time this season that all three will compete against another team in a fast-paced, chaotic atmosphere of a live football game," says coach

Fans can expect:

  • All three teams taking the field — Freshmen in the 1st quarter, JV in the 2nd, Varsity in the 2nd half

  • A high-energy environment where athletes must perform for longer periods of time with limited breaks

  • Quick decision-making from both players and coaches as they adapt in real time

Summerford ended saying, "I am excited that our players will get to perform in such a great atmosphere for our first night out, and I believe we will be the only show in town this Thursday, which should bring a crowd. I am excited to get this season kicked off. GO JAGS!"

This game is more than just a pre-season matchup — it’s the start of a journey that will be filled with determination, sportsmanship, and pride for West Florida High School. Win or lose, these Jaguars will represent their school and community with honor, both on the field and in the classroom this season. Let’s pack the stands, be loud, and show our young men that the Jaguar Nation is behind them every snap of the way.
